Tips to Make Sure Your Tires are Winter Ready

Tips to Make Sure Your Tires are Winter Ready

1st October 2020
It’s Fall Y’all!

With the first official day of Fall behind us, much of the U.S. is seeing cooler temperatures. What does that mean for your tires and why does the low tire pressure symbol always come on during this time of year?

When the outside temperature drops, so does tire inflation pressure. The air inside your tires condenses therefore taking up less space. Tire pressure decreases about 1 PSI (pound per square inch) for every 10°F the temperature drops. You probably see the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) warning light come on when you start your vehicle after the first big cold front. You probably also notice that the warning light turns off once you have driven a couple miles and the vehicle starts to warm up. Whether the light goes off or not, your tire pressure needs to be adjusted to the door placard specs. If you have plus sized your tire you will need to consult the manufacturer or tire dealer to ensure your PSI meets the load carry capacity of the vehicle specs. This is easy to do yourself or you can ask your local tire shop to check your tire pressure, many offer it for free.

As a rule, regardless of season, tire pressure should be checked monthly. Do not wait for the light to come on or for your tires to “look low”.

To help stay safe on the road, we recommend the following 123 before you go:

1) Get ready now. Check your tire pressure and adjust as needed. A vehicle’s PSI is listed in the owner’s manual and on the placard inside the driver’s door.

2) Look closely at your tread and replace any tires that have uneven wear or damage such as cracks, punctures, and bulges. Tread should be at least 2/32nds of an inch or greater on all tires. A quick way to test tread depth is to use a U.S. penny. Insert the edge of the coin into the tread with Lincoln going in headfirst. If the top of Lincoln’s head is visible at any location on the tire, it is time to replace.

3) Do not forget your spare tire! Make sure the tire is properly inflated, there are no cracks or uneven wear and you have all the tools needed for installation.

If it is time to replace your tires, Venezia offers performance tires in the most popular sizes for all your driving needs. Venezia tires are backed by our No Questions Asked, 25/365 Free Replacement Limited Protection Policy. Ask your local tire retailer about Venezia tires today!

Stay safe!

Loud or Noisy Tires

Tire noise can just be an annoyance rather than an indicator that something bigger is wrong with your car. When tires rotate, the tread traps air in the pockets of the tread design. Due to the weight of the car, the tread grooves squeeze, which compresses the air. When the pressurized air pops out, it produces noise through hard vibration. Tires also can make noise through their interaction with the surface. Another reason for tire noise is the actual air in the tire itself.

Tire noise is not an issue when these have been professionally checked and cleared by a mechanic:
● Alignment and balance
● Wheel or rim damage
● Struts and shocks
● Wheel bearings

Once they look at your tires they can explain the performance characteristics of each tire and how it fits your vehicle and individual driving characteristics.
One of our brands concerns is that we go the extra steps to insure our tires are tested and we are always working on improving this.

How Can I Make My Tire Tread Last longer

How Can I Make My Tire Tread Last longer

Prolonging your tires starts with proper maintenance. Tires that have been well maintained not only promote longer tread-life, they substantially improve your safety.

● Tire Pressure –

○ Correct tire pressure is essential for reliable handling, effective traction, and optimal tire life. Properly inflated tires will assure that the vehicle’s weight is equally distributed, resulting in even wear. Factors such as temperature change and leaks can affect tire pressure, so it is important to check it often.

● Tire Rotation –

○ Tire rotation is a key factor in assuring even tread wear. Depending on the type of vehicle and your specific tread wear pattern, different types of rotational patterns will be most beneficial. Having your tires rotated by automotive professionals will provide this service as well as the opportunity to detect other issues before them become serious problems.

● Wheel Alignment –
○ Problems resulting from improper wheel alignment include poor vehicle handling and steering, as well as uneven and rapid tread wear. Many factors can affect alignment, including a minor accident, which may not cause visible body damage. Checking your alignment regularly will prevent a host of problems down the road.

Your vehicle manufacturer manual will provide guidelines for proper maintenance. You can count on us to help you take care of your tires and your vehicle and provide expert auto services when you need them.

What consumers must know
At AOT, what we have prided ourselves on most in over the 25 years, is the safety and value of our tires. What we know is most important to all tire consumers is quality!
Have you heard the saying: Quality is imperative in all products and it is a misconception on the part of the companies to think that value is created because of the quality of their product? Quality is important, but consumers purchase a product not because it has quality, but they will not buy it in the absence of quality.

Think about that full phrase for a moment. Why do you buy the tires you are buying? You will no doubt take two major factors into consideration when buying tires. Its Quality most likely #1, followed by cost. Together that defines VALUE.
AOT tires have taken that equation and mastered the highest VALUE of tires in all our brands. Today’s economy has no doubt created such a massive amount of “educated shoppers”, right? Or are they?

One thing not many consumers are asking themselves, or the retailers when looking for tires is “What is the D.O.T.?”.
Are you reading this saying to yourself, WHAT? The D.O.T., wait, what is A, D.O.T.???
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) requires a Tire Identification Numbers be a combination of the letters DOT.

Since 2000, ALL tires must list the week and year the tire was produced. You find this by looking for initials DOT. Then that is followed by 4 consecutive numbers. Two digits being used to identify the week, immediately preceding the two digits used to identify the year.

The industry will call this information, a tires DOT. Even though DOT stands for Department of Transportation, ask ANY tire retailer, “What’s the DOT”, and they immediately will know you want the tires production date.

You are spending your hard-earned money on tires. So many retailers will want to unload their “Older” tires first. What good is a high end/name brand tire with a five year or even older DOT, that can’t be confirmed has been in climate-controlled warehouses for the life of it?
In summation, next time you buy a tire, online or in person, make sure you ask, “HEY! What’s its DOT!”

Whether you’re buying a new pair of jeans, golf clubs, or tires, there is always a quality spectrum for the product in mind. Quality impacts price, but is it always worth it? Can you get the same quality tires for less?
Absolutely.
Quality isn’t the only factor that impacts price.
When you understand all the considerations around tire price, you can choose the best product for you. Elements include: lifespan, handling, name brand, tread, braking, and more.
Lifespan
Durability, or a range of factors that influence the tires expected lifespan, is one of the most critical elements that impacts price. Though softer rubber tires perform better, it wears faster. Harder rubber will outlast a softer rubber tire. So balance is key.
To counteract this soft/hard tire dilema, tires are designed to have reinforcement through sturdy sidewalls. It’s more challenging to examine this with your eye, as the steel tire frame is covered by the tread. So talk to the sales person or do your own research about the construction of the tire before choosing the right quality tire for you.
Handling
Handling is a major part of tire performance and therefore affects the price. From a driver perspective, handling is a measurement of how the vehicle responds to driver commands. These considerations are steering, accelerating, and braking.
Handling is linked to safety, driver pleasure, and overall vehicle performance. It is a major element that is commented on by vehicle thought leaders and industry media.
Even though variables outside of the tire itself impact handling, like vehicle type and size, the pavement type, weather conditions, temperature, and driving assistant systems – tires play a major role. The tire is the end of the kinetic chain. Where the rubber meets the road. Higher quality tires handle better.
Name Brand
Just like every product you buy, name brand is a major component to price. People buy a brand just because they have heard of it before, or seen their commercials on TV. But as we know, there are so many other aspects to the overall tire quality besides name brand.
The industry has evolved to include plenty of tire brands that are of equal performance and of identical quality to the name brands. These alternatives simple have not had enough time to develop the brand reputation that the existing name brands have. One day these will easily become as well known.
In the meantime, you can experience a great deal and walk away with an excellent product for half the costs.
Thread
As discussed in our article about when to buy new tires, tread is one of the most important considerations in the tire arena. Tread keeps your wheels firmly on the road in rainy / snowy / muddy conditions, maintains air pressure, and avoids blowouts.
Therefore, tread thickness and pattern impacts the bottom line. Thicker tread with wider water grooves will dramatically increase your ability to handle in inclement conditions and ultimately keep you and your family safe. Loudness is an adverse effect of thicker tread – thick treads means loud tires.
Even though tread is a consideration, it isn’t as influential as other variables.
Braking
No matter how safe of a driver you are, everyone finds themselves in an aggressive braking situation from time to time. Because of this, a shorter braking distance is always preferred. Each tire has an estimated braking distance.
Tires are not generally designed for braking distance, which could be something parents choose for inexperienced drivers. This element is just result of the overall tire design, and important to some buyers.
